GOODNIGHT’S INDIAN-FIGHTING past revisited him from time to time until his own death. Toward the end of his life, he was visited at home in Goodnight, Texas, by some Kiowas passing through. Among them was an elder who, as the visit wore on, described a fight between his band and some Texas Rangers fifty years before in Quitaque country. Goodnight had been involved in such a gun battle in the same place at about the same time. When the Kiowa recalled being shot at by a ranger with a six-shooter, Goodnight realized that the Kiowa was describing him. He remembered the incident clearly, but had always thought he had fatally wounded the Kiowa on his horse.

“Gotdamn!” Goodnight exclaimed. “I wished I had killed you at the time—I certainly thought I did—but I’m gotdamn glad I didn’t now.” Then he cooked a big dinner for the whole Kiowa party.
